The deep reds are evening colours in a way the neutrals are not — merlot, burgundy and wine carry an occasion without any embellishment at all, which is why several of these are cut plain. Plum and berry sit lighter and are easier to wear in daylight. These shades hold thread and DMC work beautifully, particularly tonal work in the same family, where the pattern shows as texture rather than contrast.
